Fountains Blaze OffIndependence, MO
2nd Place Pork
Burnt Finger BBQ once again attended the Fountains Blaze Off in Independence, MO. This is one of our favorites events of the year. In past years we’ve used it as a nice relaxing way to wind down our season after the big American Royal weekend. That changed this year when the American Royal moved their event to the end of October. Now we get to use the Fountains contest as one last tune-up before the World Series of Barbecue.
In addition to it’s timeliness to the Royal, we also like this contest because it’s held at a local retirement community. The residents of the facility very much look forward to this event, and we are always warmly welcomed into the community. Residents come around to the cook sites all weekend asking questions, and there’s even a happy hour on Friday evening for everyone to get together and interact. Ultimately the event culminates in a huge barbecue feast for all of the residents on Saturday evening. It’s what barbecue is really all about!
We’ve been doing a lot of development work on our pork recipe this year, and this week we finally ran our new recipe at a contest. I’d say our efforts paid off as we landed a 2nd place finish and missed a 180 by 1 taste point. We’ll gladly take that momentum into the upcoming American Royal!
